Rookie Camp a Major Success

May 10th, 2012

The Waterloo Siskins hosted their 2012/13 Rookie Camp in New Hamburg last weekend. The camp attracted 57 Siskin hopefuls and was a huge success by all measures. Players attending camp came from all over the province of Ontario and parts of the United States. The goal of each attending participant was to attain an invitation to the Siskin main camp that starts Saturday August 18th and then to make the roster for the Waterloo Siskins 79th team this fall.

“We’re very optimistic about what this upcoming season will bring for the Siskins,”commented Head Coach Randy Harbach after seeing the talent that presented itself in the Rookie Camp.

Participants were provided with 4-½ hours of ice time in under 24 hours to exhibit their abilities. Inter-squad team sizes were limited allowing players to demonstrate their skill and physical conditioning. Participants were provided with fresh nutrition prepared for by the Waterloo Siskins ladies auxiliary between skates. Every participant received a custom professional Easton Dri-Fit with a Siskins logo as a commemorative keepsake.

The Siskins start their 2012/13 season the weekend of September 7th and have high hopes to move up in the GOJHL standings next season.

Siskins 2011/2012 Awards Banquet

Thursday April 5, 2012

The Waterloo Siskins held their annual awards banquet last evening to honor the efforts of their volunteers and exceptional performance by players from both the 2010/11 and the 2011/12 Siskin Hockey Club. The Siskins team had a good season by many measures - with a very late start and a strong finish giving the Stratford Cullitons fits in the first playoff round.

The event was hosted by Curtis Clairmont, Director of Hockey Operations for the Waterloo Siskins. Curtis acknowledged the deep history and tradition surrounding the Waterloo Siskins by sharing the trophy contributors’ roles in the history of the club. Some of the trophies have been around for 40+ years. The well-represented Siskin volunteers were honored with special mention as the “backbone” of the Waterloo Siskin organization past and present.

The new Siskin Executive was introduced and presented the awards to the players. This group includes John Beingessner, Tony Dietrich, Mark Fackoury, Pat Boucher, Greg Lusk, Larry Moreland, Brad Wanner and Curtis Clairmont.

Kyle Platzer won three awards including Rookie of the Year where he surpassed several outstanding Siskin rookies. Kyle follows Siskin Alumni and Guelph Storm forward Justin Auger as this year’s recipient. Kyle and Adam Campagnolo were line-mates most of the season and exchanged the lead for Most Points during the regular season many times.  Adam finished two points behind Kyle at the end of the regular season. Kyle also won the award for most goals.

Adam Campagnolo and Mike Van Ooteghem each won two awards and were significant contributors to the team. Adam won the coveted Most Valuable Player Award contributing to the team on the ice, in the dressing room and in the community.

The Siskins players and executive would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers, coaching staff, the City and the Siskin fans for a great year. We all look forward to many more exciting Siskin seasons to come! The next big event is the May 5th-6th camp in New Hamburg where 2012/13 season Siskin hopefuls will be dawning their gear and taking the ice for the privilege of possibly being a Siskin in what will be the 79th year of this storied franchise in Waterloo.
