Waterloo Siskins Golf Classic - 2013

Red-hot Siskins start playoffs with win over Hurricanes

ByChristine Rivet

WATERLOO — Two and a half years ago, a provincial Jr. B hockey cornerstone teetered on the brink of collapse.

Awash in a sea of red ink, the Waterloo Siskins nearly drowned after seven, buoyant decades.

Today, the resurgent Sisks are one of the hottest teams in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

"It's a credit to our guys. They want to come to work every day," said coach Chris Lazary as his Siskins recorded their 21{+s}t win in the past 26 games, a 2-1 victory over the visiting Guelph Hurricanes in a Mid-Western Conference quarter-final opener Tuesday.

"(The players) make my job easier. We just come up with the program and our players are all over it."

That is also indicative of the fine work of the Siskins president and director of hockey operations, Curtis Clairmont, who helped get the club's finances in order. He then dreamed up something big in this, the Siskins' 80th anniversary season.

Clairmont helped assemble a first-rate staff, board of directors, volunteers and, of course, a team of overachievers.

He did take some heat for bringing in Russian netminder Leo Lazarev, whom some critics say took a job away from a Canadian kid at a time when this country's junior-aged netminders struggle on the international stage.

The quick-as-a-cat 16-year-old Muscovite was named the conference's rookie of the year earlier this week. On Tuesday at the Rec Complex, he was the game's best player, expertly steering aside a 35-shot barrage in his playoff debut.

Nick Hirst scored the game winner on a third-period power play.

"Some people still don't understand how hard that guy (Clairmont) works at this," said Lazary.

As a Waterloo boy, second-year Siskin Christian Mroczkowski takes the rebuild seriously, too.

"There were a lot of doubts coming into the season. A lot of teams didn't think we'd be at where we are," said Mroczkowski, 19.

"Third place, almost in second place, for us is a huge accomplishment. We are just trying to bring back the culture of winning."
